Tips to Keep Your Home Cool Without Electricity
Enjoy the warmer months from the comfort of your home without having to pay an arm and a leg to keep your home cool! You no longer have to overuse your air conditioner. You can keep your home cool without watching your utilities skyrocket during warm months.
Keep your cool and try these tips!
Close Doors
Do you have any doors to rooms open around the house that you're not using? Close them off to prevent cool air from flowing out and hot air from creeping in.
Open Windows
You can also open windows at night when the cool air is flowing and close them during the day to keep heat out.
Hang Curtains or Blinds
Investing in blackout curtains or blinds for your home can make a big difference. Not only will it help keep cool air in, but it will also prevent the sun from shining in and heating up your home.
Use Fans
Ceiling fans are especially great because they can help circulate cool air throughout the house without using much energy. You can also use floor fans to cool down individual rooms as needed. Just be sure you're not pointed directly at anyone since that can actually make them feel colder. And don't forget to turn them off when you leave the room!
Keep Your Air Filter Clean
A dirty air filter can make your air conditioner work harder than it needs to, which wastes energy and drives up your utility bills. Check and clean your air filters monthly, or as needed. You'll not only save money, but you'll also extend the life of your AC unit.
Change Your Sheets
Hot weather can make it harder to sleep, but you can help cool down your bed by using sheets made of light and breathable fabrics. Linen and cotton are both great choices that will help keep you cool and comfortable all night long.
Cool Your Bed
You can also cool down your bed by placing a cooling mattress topper on your bed. Also, try freezing a few water bottles and placing them in the bed about 30 minutes before you go to sleep. The cool water will help cool down the bed so you can sleep more comfortably.
Turn Off Lights
Lights generate heat, so it's important to turn off any lights that you're not using. This will help keep your home cool and prevent your AC unit from working harder than it needs to.
Turn Off Electronics
Any electronics that give off heat should be turned off or unplugged when you're not using them. This includes things like computers, TVs, and gaming consoles. Even your coffee maker can add to the heat in your home, so only use it when you need to.
Add Insulation to Your Attic
If your home gets too hot during the day, one of the best things you can do is add insulation to your attic. This will help keep the heat out and make it easier to cool your home during the hottest hours of the day.
